Princess Alexandra Hall,
Royal Over-Seas League,
Over-Seas House, Park Place, St James's Street, London SW1A 1LR

"The Turkish Women's Movement and Legal Gains from the Ottoman Era to Present”
The Turkish feminist movement started in the late nineteenth century and continues today to fight for the rights of women. The gains in Personal Status Code, starting in the early twentieth century, benefited women with new legal codes that aimed at protecting women’s status within marriage. In this presentation, the speaker will discuss these changes and the gains from the most recent adoption of the Legal Codes. In conclusion, the societal and cultural barriers to the gainful adoption of laws for the improvement of women’s status will be offered.

Professor Aysegul Baykan

A Turkish Woman Activist: Nezihe Muhittin
Nezihe Muhittin was born in 1889 during the absolute rule of Sultan Abdulhamit and became an ardent believer of Ataturk's reforms, devoting her life to the education and development of the women of Turkey. She was a prolific writer of the then very necessary school books as well as novels and records of interesting social and political events of the time. She was also an instigator of women's social and charitable organizations and several women's journals. She wrote more than 15 novels which were very popular at the time-sentimental novels with a didactic, feminist emphasis.
